FUNDAMENTAL VIOLIN TECHNIQUES
The purpose the Fundamental Violin Techniques and Overview Course is to study, from the teacher’s perspective, fundamental violin playing techniques, as they apply to beginning students, advanced students, and professional players. The 2009 course will include:
- Musical Expression & Imagery
- The development of efficient and healthy technique designed to give physical freedom and avoid injury.
- Opportunity for teachers to have an individual in class lesson. (Playing Suzuki pieces for these lessons is encouraged)
- Observation of student lessons
- Left and right brain learning
- Coaching in leading (conducting with the violin) the group class of teachers using Suzuki repertory of your choice.
- Discussion on how to prepare families to begin their Suzuki Experience.
Music from the Suzuki Violin School, volumes 1-6, will be used to trace musical and technical development. Topics for playing and discussion will include: psychology and structure for remediation, musical imaging, group class leadership techniques, balanced posture, intonation, vibrato, velocity, balanced bowing, tone production, legato, staccato, spiccato, colle’, sautille’, string crossings and chords. Teachers who elect an individual lesson during class may play from Suzuki or other repertory. Participants should come with violin, Suzuki Violin School Volumes 1 – 6 and note taking materials. Membership in the Suzuki Association of the Americas is required.

February is high season in St. Petersburg, so rooms need to be reserved now. Air tickets need to be booked early, ii you prefer inexpensive flights.
Ronda Cole is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music, a Suzuki Association of the America’s Registered Teacher Trainer, writer for the SAA Journal, Director of the Greater Washington Suzuki Institute, and the teacher of several young Suzuki children who have been soloists with the National and Baltimore Symphony Orchestras. Several musicians raised in her studio now play in major orchestras, some have won national and international competitions, others are teachers and many are amateurs who enjoy playing into adulthood. Ms. Cole was awarded the ASTA Citation for Leadership and Excellence, and has been a faculty member for the ASTA International Workshops in Switzerland, Austria, Australia, Hawaii, France, Scotland, and Norway. Ronda serves on the faculty at the University of Maryland and directs the Master’s Degree Program in Suzuki Violin Pedagogy.
The Suzuki Association of the Americas offers this course to its members and limits the number of participating teachers to 25. Teachers who fulfill the course pre-requisites, attend all session, observe the eight hours of lesson offered, may register their training with the SAA.
The Course begins on Sunday, February 15th at 1:30 PM and ends Thursday, February 19st after a luncheon. Registration is by mail and accepted on a ‘first come, first serve’ basis. The course fills up early. All fees must be paid at the time of registration. Partial fees are not accepted. Registration deadline is December 1, 2008. Tuition is not refundable after January 2, 2009 postmark. Confirmation letter, schedule and general information will be mailed in January.
